Libraries, Archives and Museums on Common Paths
Convergent and Divergent Tendencies in the Public Collections Sector
Abstract
Libraries, archives and museums are often regarded as one common area responsible for the preservation of cultural heritage. Based on literature, the article reviews the factors that have influenced the convergence and divergence between the different sectors of public collections in recent decades.
The different sectors of public collections have common historical antecedents, and the development of institutional systems also has common roots. The individual sectors of the public collections separated at the end of the 19th century, when independent professional identities have developed.
The development of independent professional identities resulted in different methodologies and approaches, which influenced the independence of institutional systems. In the 21st century, in the age of digitalization, libraries, archives and museums have been placed on a single platform in the electronic space, often providing cultural heritage documents on common interfaces.
Besides digitization, many factors are contributing to convergence from the general expectation of the Society toward launching cooperation's, to the user-orientation, participation and the common social space in which the institutions are operating. As a result of convergence, governmental bodies supporting joint strategic development and integrated institutions have appeared. Libraries, archives and museums developed similar answers to similar social challenges.
